TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT
The War in Iraq Special - Number 4
In my attempt to try and explain where we are in the struggle to win the war
in Iraq, I think we should take just a moment to remind ourselves why we are
in Iraq, fighting a war to free a people in a far away land, half a world
away. As usual, time has a tendency to play tricks on our memory and with
different agenda driven groups trying to re-write history, I fear we may not
know where we are now and where we are going, because we have forgotten
where we have been.
Today our country is divided over whether President Bush was right in
starting this war and whether or not he and his military planners know what
they are doing in fighting the war in Iraq. There is much debate about the
real cause for our being in the war. Some say it was because of Hussein's
WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, others believe it is because of the oil and
this is a way to use our military to help President Bush and Vice President
Cheney's buddies get it. Some even claim it is revenge for Daddy Bush's
failure to get Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War or to get back at Saddam for
putting a hit out to get the Senior Bush.
May I set the record straight, or at least give you my opinion of why we are
in Iraq and where we are in the war. First, let me remind you, why and how,
we got in this war in the first place. President Bush didn't start this
war. they did. Yes, and "they" in this case, were the terrorists and it
started on September 11, 2001 ( better known today as 911) in New York City,
Washington, D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania.
It wasn't about WMD, oil or revenge. It was about protecting you and me and
our families from having to worry about terrorists killing us right here in
the United States of America. Don't let time, politics or anything else
confuse you about who started this war and when it actually began.
Next, I would suggest that we not let politicians, the media, foreign
leaders or anyone else tell us how well we are doing and how we should be
conducting this war. No one knows exactly how this war should be fought
because this is a totally new type of war and President Bush and his
military leaders have to develop new strategies and techniques to win this
new type of war. Once we win, and if, heaven forbid, another war just like
this occurs in the future, what we, are learning today will serve as a guide
for the leaders in the future to use.
This is not just a war in Iraq; this is a war against worldwide terrorism.
It encompasses international relations, religion, global economics and over
a thousand years of cultural differences that have finally come to a head,
as well as the lessons of how this world must learn to live together or
maybe, whether or not this world will get to live at all.
We are in a multifaceted, incredibly complex battle that has unbelievable
potential for the world, all people and cultures that must try to co-exist
in the future. At this point, how it all ends is not certain, the only
thing anyone other than God knows, is that one day this war in Iraq and all
of the other dynamics involved, will end and it will be a good ending or a
bad one. As for me, I pray it will have a good ending and last for a long
time.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the war in Iraq is really about a
whole lot of stuff and it is one gigantic mess that President Bush did not
start and wishes it never started, but it did, and he is doing the best he
can. We all need to join together and pray that he and his team handle it
right or we all lose. As for me, I think he is doing a good job in a bad
situation.
Folks, this is not a war for political parties to try and use to win the
Presidency in 2004. This war is not business as usual for political
handlers to play with to help one party or the other. The media had better
be careful and report this war truthfully and not use their power and
influence to get one political party in and the other party out. Nor is
this war a chance for conservatives and liberals to continue to divide our
nation and to try and increase their numbers in the normal struggle for
power.
As to the future of the war in Iraq, it depends on how well we, the people
of the United States, can put aside our differences and unite behind our
troops, our military leaders and our President to show the world, and more
specifically the terrorists, that we are one nation, indivisible, firmly
committed to support our soldiers and our President's goals to win the war
for peace.
I am asking you to pray to God, that he would give President Bush the wisdom
to win the war for peace, not just in Iraq but to win the war for peace, for
all people throughout the world.
President Bush, we are all behind you and we are very proud of the job our
troops are doing in Iraq and the job you are doing to bring peace and
stability throughout the world. From a grateful nation, thank you.
See You Next Week and May God Bless,
ANOTHER READER LETTER
Thank you Larry for helping us to understand what is happening in Iraq and
the world. I for one am tired of the lies and history revision of the
politicians and the media. I just want to understand what is going on in
this war and how we can protect ourselves from further terrorism here in the
US. I never want to relive the day when I saw the towers fall and that
tremendous loss of life and the terror that I felt that I or my family could
have been victim of such an attack. That day changed America forever and
without Nichols Notes I would not fully understand what is happening.
I urge everyone that I know to subscribe to Nichols notes just as I have and
to write the representatives in Washington and their state capitols to do
all that they can to support the president and to close the boarders to
illegal immigration. Just yesterday I heard that our federal government was
holding meetings in Texas to tell illegal's that they don't have to fear us
deporting them back to Mexico. What kind of a country is it when our own
government won't enforce the laws of the country when our lives are at
stake? The people crossing our boarders illegally aren't just indigent
Mexicans; they are also terrorists.
Larry, if everyone reading Nichols Notes sent each issue to everyone in
their address book with a note asking them to sign up to get their own copy,
soon the whole nation would know what is going on. I hope you can do
something about the illegal problem and the terrorists that it is allowing
to enter our country. We here in California are awash in illegal's and
there are a lot more of us that are voters than President Bush will ever get
by romancing Vicente Fox and the few additional Hispanic voters that he
might get.
Name withheld upon request.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
An agreement means very little in letter without the character and
relationship base to sustain it in spirit.
